How Keeping One Client Happy Got Me Referrals and Monthly Income
Gerardo's update on how two happy clients turned into referrals, websites for their other businesses, and a $150/month AI marketing add-on from one of them, plus simple ways to keep clients coming back.

Quick update today. I want to talk about something I didn't think much about when I started selling websites.
When I started, I thought the job was simple. Find a client, build the site, get paid, move on to the next one.
But some of my best work hasn't come from new clients. It's come from clients I already had.
Two clients, a bunch of businesses
I have two clients I want to talk about. One owns a nail salon, a restaurant, and a brunch spot. The other owns a window covering business that does window shade design.
I built websites for them. They liked the work. And more importantly, they saw that the websites actually helped. The sites led to real growth for their businesses. That looked like more bookings and more customers calling.
That's the part that matters. When a client can see that your work made a difference, you're not just "the website person" anymore. You're someone they trust.
What a good relationship turned into
Because I kept a good relationship with these two clients, I got a lot more out of working with them than just one website. Here's what happened:
- Referrals. They recommended me to new clients, people they already know.
- More websites. I built websites for their other businesses too.
- Monthly income. One of them lets me add a monthly charge of $150 to do AI marketing for them.
Think about that for a second. I didn't have to go find those new clients. They came to me because someone they trust already liked my work.
And that $150 a month from one client is money that keeps coming in, without me having to land a brand new client every time.
Also, when a client owns more than one business, there's more than one place your help can make a difference. That's what happened here. One client turned into several sites.
Why one happy client is worth so much
Finding a new client takes work. You have to find them, reach out, pitch, and hope they say yes.
A client who already likes you skips all of that. They know you. They've seen what you can do. So when you offer something extra, it's a much easier yes.
A referral works the same way. When your client tells a friend "this guy made my website and it helped," that friend already trusts you a little before you even talk.
What I'd tell you to do
If you're selling websites to local businesses, here's what I'd focus on after the site goes live:
- Check in after launch. Don't disappear the day you get paid. Ask how things are going.
- Show them the results. If the site is helping, point it out. Owners are busy and might not notice on their own.
- Offer something ongoing. Once they trust you, a monthly service like marketing can be a natural next step. Only offer what you can actually do well.
- Ask about their other businesses. A lot of owners have more than one. Don't assume they'd say no.
- Ask for referrals. If they're happy, just ask if they know anyone else who needs a website. A lot of people are glad to help.
None of this is complicated. It's mostly just being someone people like working with.
It all starts with the first client
Of course, you need that first client before any of this can happen.
That's where Locasly helps me. I use it to find local businesses on Google Maps, see which ones have a weak website or no website at all, and keep track of who I've talked to in the pipeline.
If you're still trying to land your first one, my post on how I helped my friend Sanni sell AI websites in Merced is a good place to start. And if you're not sure what to charge, check out how much to charge for a small business website.
The big takeaway
Don't treat every client like a one-time sale.
Do good work. Make sure it actually helps their business. Stay in touch. If you do that, one good client can turn into referrals, more websites, and even monthly income.
That's been true for me with these two clients, and I think it can work for you too.
